Product Description

The travelling hook block is a lifting device used on drilling and workover rigs, which takes an integral design integrating the travelling block and the hook into a single unit. By eliminating the conventional detachable coupling between the block and the hook, this integral design shortens the overall length of the travelling assembly and makes better use of the vertical clearance available in the derrick or mast.

It is also known as a hook block, an integral travelling block, or a drawworks hook block. This equipment sits opposite—and directly under—the crown block, which is the stationary set of sheaves mounted at the top of the mast. Together, the crown block, drilling line, travelling block, hook, swivel, and elevators form the rig’s main hoisting system.

Through reeving, the drilling line runs multiple times between the crown block and the travelling block to multiply the pulling force from the drawworks drum. The hook at the bottom of the travelling block then suspends the swivel, which in turn supports the entire drill string via elevators or a top drive system.

All our hook blocks are designed, manufactured, and tested in accordance with API Spec 8C (Specification for Drilling and Production Hoisting Equipment). The primary load carrying parts are subjected to 100% nondestructive examination (NDE) before delivery, ensuring the high level of safety required by international drilling operations.

The travelling hook block is one of the most heavily loaded components on the entire drilling rig. Its main functions include:

Hoisting and tripping the drill pipe – Raising the entire drill string out of the hole for bit changes or when running casing.

Running casing strings – Lowering heavy casing joints into the wellbore during the completion phase.

Replacing drill bits – Pulling the bottom hole assembly (BHA) to the surface, changing the bit, and running back in.

Alloy steel sheave shafts with lubrication passages

Sheave shafts are forged from alloy steel with a central lubrication hole feeding each bearing. A single lubrication point per sheave reduces maintenance time.

Reliable safety device on main hook

The hook is equipped with a spring-loaded safety latch that automatically closes to prevent accidental disengagement of the swivel bail or elevators. The latch has a positive locking indicator visible from the rig floor.

360° hook rotation and position lock

The hook body can rotate freely through 360 degrees, which is essential during make-up and break-out of tool joints. A locking mechanism allows the operator to fix the hook in any position when required.

Spring travel for shock absorption

Integral springs (or optional hydraulic snubber assemblies) cushion the load when the travelling assembly is lowered onto the drill string or casing, protecting tool joints from impact damage.

Auxiliary hook for light loads

A smaller secondary hook is mounted on the side of the main hook body, rated for 90 kN to 120 kN depending on model. Used for handling light equipment, running wireline tools, or other auxiliary lifting tasks without disturbing the main string.

How to Select the Right Travelling Hook Block

Choosing the correct hook block requires balancing the rig’s maximum hook load capacity, the number of drilling line parts, the wireline diameter, and available derrick space.

Step 1 – Determine required hook load capacity:
The hook load should be rated for at least the sum of:

Weight of the longest drill string or casing string to be run.

Weight of the blocks, hook, and swivel (dead weight).

 

Sufficient margin for shock loads and overpull. API 8C recommends minimum 25% over the maximum calculated load, though many operators specify a larger safety factor.

Step 2 – Match the number of sheaves and line parts:
More sheaves reduce the fast line load but increase the total length of the block. Use the number of sheaves that matches the drawworks rating and the intended line-reeving plan. For reference:

12-line string up: 5 sheaves (6 sheaves on crown block)

10-line string up: 4 sheaves (5 sheaves on crown block)

8-line string up: 3 sheaves (4 sheaves on crown block)

Step 3 – Verify wireline compatibility:
The wireline diameter must match the sheave groove size and the drawworks drum capacity. Using undersized wire rope reduces service life; oversized rope damages sheave grooves.

Step 4 – Consider top drive clearance if applicable:
If the rig is equipped with a top drive, the reduced overall length of an integral hook block is particularly beneficial. The additional clearance above the top drive allows the unit to be lifted higher for service access without hitting the crown block.
