Product Description

A downhole motor (also known as a positive displacement motor, PDM, or mud motor) is a downhole drilling tool that converts the hydraulic power of drilling fluid into mechanical power to rotate the drill bit. Unlike conventional rotary drilling where the entire drillstring rotates from the surface, the downhole motor rotates only the bit while the drillstring remains stationary — a mode known as "sliding drilling". This unique capability makes downhole motors essential for directional drilling, horizontal drilling, and performance drilling applications.

Our company offers a comprehensive range of downhole motors with model designations from LZ73 to LZ286, suitable for hole diameters from 88.9 mm (3½") to 660 mm (26"). We can also design and manufacture custom motors according to customer specifications.

How a Downhole Motor Works?

A downhole motor consists of three major assemblies, from top to bottom:

Bypass valve – Allows drilling fluid to bypass the motor when running in or pulling out of the hole. When fluid flow and pressure reach set values, the valve closes and directs fluid through the motor.

Power section (motor assembly) – The core component consisting of a stator (steel tube with elastomer lining) and a rotor (hardened steel screw). The stator has one more lobe than the rotor. As drilling fluid is pumped through, it creates hydraulic pressure that causes the rotor to precess and rotate within the stator, converting fluid power into mechanical torque and speed.

Transmission section (universal shaft) – Converts the planetary motion of the rotor into fixed-axis rotation, transmitting torque and speed to the drive shaft.

Drive shaft (bearing assembly) – Transmits rotational power to the drill bit while bearing axial and radial loads from drilling pressure.

The lobe configuration (e.g., 5:6, 7:8, 9:10) and number of stages determine the motor's torque, speed, and pressure drop characteristics-.

Key Features & Advantages

1. High Directional Accuracy

Downhole motors provide excellent control over wellbore trajectory, making them ideal for directional wells, horizontal wells, and cluster wells. They allow precise changes in wellbore direction according to design requirements-.

2. Increased Rate of Penetration (ROP)

By rotating the bit directly at the bottom of the hole, downhole motors deliver more power to the formation, significantly increasing penetration rates compared to conventional rotary drilling.

3. Reduced Casing Wear

When drilling in straight hole applications, the motor functions as a performance tool that minimises drillstring rotation, thereby reducing casing wear and extending well life.

4. Stable Torque Output

Our motors provide consistent torque during drilling, reducing bit bounce and vibration. This improves drilling efficiency, extends bit life, and enhances overall drilling quality.

5. Adaptability to Various Formations

From soft shales to hard abrasive formations, our downhole motors perform reliably across a wide range of drilling conditions.

6. Broad Operating Temperature Range

With high-temperature elastomers, our motors can operate at temperatures exceeding 150°C, meeting the requirements of deep wells, ultradeep wells, and high geothermal gradient areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between a downhole motor and a rotary steerable system (RSS)?

A downhole motor rotates the bit using drilling fluid power while the drillstring remains stationary. An RSS rotates the entire drillstring while steering. Downhole motors are more economical for most directional applications.

Q: How do I select the correct downhole motor for my well?

Selection depends on hole size, required torque and speed, flow rate available, well temperature, and whether directional or straight hole drilling is planned. Use our specification tables above or contact us for assistance.

Q: Can your downhole motors be used with oil-based muds?

Yes. Our motors are available with special elastomers and rotor coatings designed for aggressive oil-based muds, high temperatures, and briny environments.
