Sand Blender – Complete Guide

What Is a Sand Blender?

In oilfield operations, fracturing (or fracking”) is a process that pumps high pressure fluid into a well to crack open rock formations, allowing oil and gas to flow more easily. That fluid often carries sand (or ceramic proppant) to hold the fractures open. A sand blender is the machine that mixes that sand with the fracturing fluid – right at the well-site, in real time.

Think of a sand blender as a giant, precision-controlled mixing plant on wheels or a skid. It takes dry sand, liquid additives, and base fluid (usually water or gel) and blends them into a smooth, consistent slurry. Then it feeds that slurry to high-pressure fracturing pumps that inject it into the well.

Without a reliable sand blender, the sand concentration would be uneven, the pumps would clog, and the entire fracturing job could fail. That is why oilfield service companies depend on robust, automated sand blenders.

At Sunrise, we have supplied truck-mounted and skid-mounted sand blenders for fracturing and sand-control operations worldwide. Our units are fully hydraulically driven, offer multiple power take-off (PTO) options, and–most importantly– we customize each blender to your specific well conditions and operational needs.

Key Features of Sand Blenders

Our sand blenders are not generic machines. They incorporate decades of oilfield experience and proven automation technology. Here are the standout features:

1. Designed for Fracturing & Sand Control

The primary purpose of a sand blender is to mix, agitate, and deliver sand laden fluid to fracturing pumps. Our units handle:

Proppant (sand, ceramic, resin-coated)

Base fluids (water, linear gel, crosslinked gel, acids, emulsions)

Additives (friction reducers, breakers, biocides, surfactants, etc.)

Whether you are performing a conventional fracture job or a sand prevention (gravel pack) operation, our blender delivers the right mixture at the right rate.

2. Fully Hydraulic Drive – Smooth & Reliable

Many old style blenders use mechanical drives with clutches and gears that jerk and wear out. Our sand blenders use a fully hydraulic drive system for:

Smooth, infinite speed control of the mixing augers and discharge pump.

Lower maintenance (fewer moving parts to break).

Overload protection – the hydraulics simply bypass if sand jams the system.

Compact layout – no bulky gearboxes.

You also have a choice of power take-off (PTO) options from the truck engine or a dedicated deck engine – giving you flexibility in how you power the blender.

3. Truck-Mounted, Skid-Mounted, or Trailer/Mounted – We Customize

Every fracturing spread is different. We offer:

Truck-mounted – integrated onto a heavy-duty chassis for maximum mobility. Ideal for multiwell pads or remote exploration.

Skid-mounted – no wheels or chassis. Best for permanent installations or offshore platforms where space is tight.

Trailer-mounted – towed by a separate truck. Good if you already have prime movers.

You tell us your transport and site layout, and we build the configuration that fits.

4. Proven Automation & Control Systems

Our sand blenders feature a network automatic control system that:

Monitors sand concentration in real time.

Adjusts auger speed to maintain your target proppant load (e.g., 1 to 5 pounds per gallon).

Coordinates with the data van (if used) via remote or network control.

Logs all mixing data for post-job analysis.

Operators love our system because it is intuitive and reduces manual adjustments – which means fewer mistakes and a more consistent fracture job.

5. Premium Brand Components (No Chinese Knock-Offs)

We build our sand blenders using world-renowned brands that oilfield crews already trust:

Chassis: Benz, Kenworth (or other as requested)

Deck engine: Cat  (or DDC – Detroit Diesel)

Hydraulic transmission: Allison

Plunger pump: STP2250 horizontal triplex plunger pump (or equivalent)

High energy blending unit: HP23

Using premium brands means you get global parts availability, known service intervals, and fewer surprises.

Interpretation: At low gear (I), you get very high pressure (over 11,000 psi) but lower flow. At high gear (VII), you get maximum flow (~879 GPM) but lower pressure (~3,900 psi). This allows you to match the pump’s output to the fracture stage requirements – high pressure for breakdown, high flow for proppant placement.

Why Buy a Sand Blender from Sunrise?

You might be considering other suppliers. Here is why oilfield companies choose us:

1. Customization – Not a “One Size Fits All” Machine

Many manufacturers sell only standard models. We ask: what is your well depth? What proppant do you use? Do you need CO₂ capability? Do you operate in extreme cold or heat? We then design and build the sand blender to match your exact fracturing spread. You are not forced to adapt your job to an off-the-shelf machine.

2. Proven Automation = Less Downtime, Better Fractures

Our network automatic control system has been refined over hundreds of jobs. It maintains proppant concentration within ±0.2 ppg, even when sand flow surges or fluid viscosity changes. This means:

No pump screens plugging from “sand slugs”.

Consistent fracture geometry.

Less non-productive time (NPT) spent cleaning blenders.

3. Decade of Oilfield Experience – We Know Fracturing

Sunrise has supplied equipment to CNPC, SINOPEC, and international service companies since 2012. Our engineers have personally worked on fracturing spreads in deserts, mountains, and offshore. When you call with a technical question, you speak to someone who has actually blended sand on a job.

4. We Partner with Top Chinese Manufacturers, Then Add Our Quality Control

We do not simply act as a middleman. We:

Select only API-licensed, ISO-9001 factories.

Station our own quality inspectors during assembly.

Witness hydraulic and functional tests before shipping.

Provide full documentation (test reports, material certs, as-built drawings).

You get a machine built to international standards – at a fair price.

5. Global Logistics + Field Support

We have exported sand blenders to more than 15 countries. Our logistics team handles:

Heavy-lift ocean freight.

Customs clearance (including CITES for engine imports, if needed).

Delivery to your wellsite or storage yard.

Optional: We can send a service engineer to supervise assembly and train your crew.

Common Applications of Our Sand Blenders

Hydraulic fracturing (conventional, plug-&-perf, or sliding sleeve)

Sand control / gravel packing (open hole or cased hole)

Acid fracturing (with special acid-resistant trim)

Energized fluid fracturing (CO₂ or N₂ – with optional piping)
