Product Description

Cold Weather Drilling Rig – Engineered for Extreme Arctic & Sub-Arctic Operations

Product Overview

A cold weather drilling rig is a specially designed land-based drilling system engineered to operate reliably in extreme low temperature environments, such as those found in Siberia, Canada's oil sands regions, Alaska, and other Arctic and sub-Arctic areas. These rigs are built to withstand some of the harshest conditions on earth, where temperatures can plummet to -45°C (-49°F) during operation and as low as -60°C (-76°F) during storage.

Operating drilling equipment in such extreme cold presents unique challenges. Standard steel becomes brittle and prone to fracture. Conventional lubricants thicken to the consistency of paste. Rubber seals lose their elasticity and leak. Hydraulic fluids fail to flow. Electrical components malfunction. And perhaps most critically, personnel face life threatening risks from frostbite and hypothermia.

Our cold weather drilling rigs are designed from the ground up to address every one of these challenges. They incorporate comprehensive winterization measures—from the use of low temperature resistant structural materials and special cold weather components to full heating and insulation systems that protect both equipment and personnel. The rigs are available in multiple configurations—modularized, truck-mounted, trailer-mounted, fast-moving, and bootstrap designs—to suit different operational requirements and transport logistics.

All our cold weather drilling rigs are manufactured in compliance with API Q1, 4F, 7K and 8C specifications, and can be API monogrammed-. For operations in regions governed by Russian regulations, the rigs also comply with GOST 12.2.141-99 and Russian petroleum industry safety requirements.

Key Design Features – Built for Extreme Cold

1. Low Temperature Materials and Specialized Processes

The rig's main structural components—including the mast, substructure, and drawworks housing—are manufactured using low temperature resistant steel that maintains its toughness and load-bearing capacity even at -45°C. All welding, machining, and heat treatment processes are specifically adapted for cold-weather service to prevent brittle fracture and ensure long-term structural integrity.

2. Comprehensive Heating and Insulation Systems

The rig features a multi-layered heating and insulation system that maintains safe operating temperatures throughout the equipment and work areas:

Drill floor heating – Ensures the drill floor temperature remains ≥0°C (32°F)

Insulation shelter heating – Maintains a minimum temperature of ≥10°C (50°F) inside the shelter

Electric tracing and heaters – Applied to circulating pipelines, hydraulic lines, air lines, and electrical facilities to prevent freezing

Steam coils and steam air – Provided for major structural parts, key areas, and facilities

Windwalls and heat preservation sheds – Shield open-area operations from wind chill and heat loss

A parallel partitioned heating approach is used for precise thermal insulation, improving heating efficiency and reducing energy waste.

3. Cold-Resistant Components and Consumables

All critical components are selected or specially manufactured for low-temperature service:

Special cold-resistance rubber parts, seals, and hoses – Maintain flexibility and sealing integrity in extreme cold

Cold-weather lubricants and hydraulic fluids – Special low-viscosity oils ensure proper flow and lubrication

Cold-temperature engine start assisting devices – Enable reliable starting in sub-zero conditions

Automatic temperature-controlled heating devices – Installed on lubricating oil tanks to maintain optimal fluid temperature

Special axles and tyres for low temperature – Ensure safe and reliable road transport in cold climates

4. Flexible Power Supply Options

The rig's power supply system can be configured for diesel generator sets or industrial grid power, with seamless interchangeability between the two. This flexibility is particularly valuable in remote Arctic locations where grid power may be unavailable or unreliable.

5. Modular and Fast-Moving Configurations

The rig is available in a variety of designs to suit different operational needs:

Cold temperature modularized drilling rig – Ideal for operations requiring frequent relocation

Cold temperature fast-moving drilling rig – Designed for rapid rig-up and rig-down

Cold temperature truck-mounted drilling rig – Maximum mobility for multi-well pad operations

Cold temperature bootstrap drilling rig – Self-erecting design for minimal crane requirements

Cold temperature pad drilling rig – Purpose-built for cluster well drilling

Slide-rail and pawl-slide-rail designs are available for cluster well operations, allowing the entire rig to be moved along a track system between wells on a single pad. The insulation shelter is modular and integrated with the rig structure, enabling it to move together with the equipment.

6. Operator Protection and Comfort

Protecting personnel is a primary design consideration. The rig incorporates:

Electric heaters and air heating devices – Provide warmth in operator areas

Enclosed drill floor with windwalls – Shields personnel from wind chill

Heat-preservation sheds – Maintain a safe working environment in exposed areas

7. Specialized Cold-Weather Features

Engine and Power Systems

Efficient power system and special driveline for cold weather

Engine start assisting devices for reliable cold starts

Drawworks:

Equipped with auxiliary brakes (e.g., WCB324) for enhanced control in cold conditions

Mast and Substructure:

Stronger load-bearing capacity mast assembly can be suited to top drive installation

Mast and substructure raising and lowering can be performed using hydraulic cylinders

Hydraulic cylinder lifting technology is mature and reliable

Key Components:

Various key components and valves are suitable for low temperature

Local heating and insulation systems provide dual protection
