Product Description
Hydraulic Connection Union – API 16A Remote-Controlled Quick-Connect Coupling for Well Control Equipment
Product Overview
A hydraulic connection union is a remotely operated, high-pressure coupling device designed for the rapid connection and disconnection of blowout preventers (BOPs), stripper packers, lubricators, and other well control equipment. Unlike traditional manual hammer unions or flanged connections that require personnel to work in close proximity to the wellhead—often under hazardous conditions—the hydraulic connection union is actuated from a safe distance via a hydraulic remote control system-.
This remote-operation capability effectively eliminates the risk of manual intervention in high-pressure areas, protecting personnel while significantly reducing connection time. The hydraulic connection union is primarily used in coiled tubing units, snubbing units, and fracturing zipper operations, where frequent equipment changes and rapid rig-up/rig-down are essential for operational efficiency.
How It Works
The hydraulic connection union consists of two main components: a male connector (typically welded or threaded onto the equipment) and a female connector (equipped with a hydraulic actuation mechanism). When hydraulic pressure is applied from a remote control panel, the female connector's locking segments or collets engage with the male connector's profile, creating a secure mechanical lock-.
Once locked, a dual-seal system—typically comprising both metal-to-metal and elastomeric seals—provides a pressure-tight barrier capable of withstanding the most demanding well control conditions. To disconnect, hydraulic pressure is reversed, releasing the locking mechanism and allowing the connectors to separate.
The entire process is controlled from a safe distance, eliminating the need for personnel to approach the wellhead during connection or disconnection. A safe self-locking device prevents the union from slipping or moving backwards, ensuring the connection remains secure even under extreme vibration and pressure fluctuations.
Key Features
Remote hydraulic control – Eliminates manual intervention at the wellhead, significantly improving personnel safety
Quick connection and response – Reduces rig-up and rig-down time, improving overall operational efficiency
Safe self-locking device – Prevents the union from slipping backwards, ensuring connection integrity
Tapered seal bore – Facilitates alignment and connection, saving valuable operating time
Dual-seal design – Provides redundant sealing for safe and reliable performance under pressure
Various end connections – Available with flange or union ends to meet different equipment requirements
Customized design – Available upon request to meet specific customer requirements
Fracturing zipper operation – Improves efficiency when rotating operations between different wells

Applications
The hydraulic connection union is suitable for a wide range of oilfield operations:
Coiled tubing units – Quick connection of BOP, stripper packer, and lubricator
Snubbing units – Remote-controlled well control equipment connection
Fracturing zipper operations – Rapid rotation between multiple wells during hydraulic fracturing
Well testing – Safe and efficient connection of well test equipment
Workover operations – Quick rig-up and rig-down of well control equipment
The hydraulic connection union is a modern, remote-controlled alternative to conventional manual connections for well control equipment. By eliminating manual intervention at the wellhead, it significantly improves personnel safety while reducing connection time and enhancing operational efficiency. API 16A/API 6A certified and available with pressure ratings up to 20,000 psi and bore sizes up to 7-1/16″, our hydraulic connection unions are built to perform in the most demanding oilfield conditions.
