Directional Drilling Non Magnetic Drill Collar

Product Description

Product Overview

A non-magnetic drill collar (NMDC) is a specialized drilling tool used in the oil and gas industry. Unlike standard steel drill collars, NMDCs are manufactured from low-carbon, high-chromium manganese alloy steel—a non-magnetic material that does not interfere with sensitive downhole instrumentation.

The primary function of any drill collar is to provide weight on the drill bit and add stiffness to the bottom hole assembly (BHA).- Non-magnetic drill collars serve this same purpose while offering one critical additional benefit: they create a magnetically neutral environment for measurement while drilling (MWD) and logging while drilling (LWD) tools. By eliminating magnetic interference from the drill string, NMDCs ensure that borehole trajectory measurements—such as inclination and azimuth—are accurate and reliable.

The global non-magnetic alloy drill collar market is projected to reach USD 0.16 billion by 2031, driven by increasing demand for high-precision directional drilling in complex geological conditions and deep-water operations.

How Non-Magnetic Drill Collars Work

During directional drilling, operators rely on magnetic survey instruments to measure the wellbore's inclination and azimuth relative to the Earth's magnetic field. However, standard steel drill collars and other ferromagnetic components in the drill string generate their own magnetic fields, which can distort these measurements.

Non-magnetic drill collars solve this problem by providing a "magnetic-free zone" within the BHA. When a magnetic survey instrument is positioned inside an NMDC of sufficient length, the collar shields it from magnetic interference generated above and below. The result is accurate, uncompromized geomagnetic data—essential for steering the wellbore to its target.

As one industry publication noted, the use of non-magnetic drill collars in surveying oil wells marks one of the greatest advances in the art during the past decade.

Types of Non-Magnetic Drill Collars

We manufacture three types of non-magnetic drill collars to suit different drilling applications and well conditions:

1. Slick Non-Magnetic Drill Collar

The slick NMDC features a smooth, as-rolled outer surface. It provides the required weight on bit without interfering with directional drilling equipment. This is the most common type of NMDC and is suitable for a wide range of drilling applications. Some slick NMDCs are flush (non-spiral) and are typically used when running magnetic survey instruments.-

2. Spiral Non-Magnetic Drill Collar

The spiral NMDC has helical grooves machined into its external surface.- These grooves serve an important purpose: they maintain an even flow of drilling fluid around the collar, equalize pressure, and reduce the risk of differential sticking—a costly problem where the drill collar becomes stuck against the wellbore wall.- The spiral design allows for greater flow area for drilling fluids while providing all the benefits of non-magnetic steel.

3. Flex Non-Magnetic Drill Collar

The flex NMDC is thinner and more flexible than a standard drill collar. This design makes it ideal for directional and horizontal drilling applications that require:

Short-radius turns

High build angles

Navigation through severe doglegs

Flex NMDCs are also well-suited for housing MWD equipment in challenging well trajectories.

Optional Features

All types can be manufactured with additional features upon request:

Elevator and slip recesses – Improve handling and safety during tripping operations

Internal bore treatment – Compresses the inside diameter to provide excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking, particularly important in H₂S environments

Shot peening of the inner diameter – Prevents stress corrosion when drilling in sour gas environments

Technical Specifications

Magnetic Properties

The defining characteristic of any NMDC is its magnetic performance. Our non-magnetic drill collars meet the following specifications:

Parameter

Specification

Relative Magnetic Permeability (μr)

≤ 1.010 (max.) / ≤ 1.005 (avg.)

Magnetic Field Gradient

≤ 0.05 μT at any 100 mm interval along the inner bore

Test Condition

Magnetic field strength of 1 × 10⁵/4π A/m

These values ensure that magnetic survey instruments inside the collar experience minimal interference, providing accurate readings of the Earth's magnetic field.

Mechanical Properties & Sizes

Non-magnetic drill collars are manufactured in accordance with API Spec 7-1 and SY/T 5144.

Parameter

Specification

Outer Diameter Range

3-1/8″ to 7-3/4″ (79.4 mm to 196.9 mm) and above
