Oilfield Safety Clamp

Product Description

The wellhead safety clamp is used together with conventional slips to prevent drilling tools from falling into the wellbore. While slips alone hold the pipe string, the safety clamp adds a secondary, fail-safe grip. If the pipe begins to slip downward, the clamp automatically tightens its hold, stopping the fall.

How It Works

The clamp consists of multiple flexibly hinged links. Each link contains a spring-retracted, tapered slip. When the clamp is tightened around the pipe, all slips contact the pipe uniformly.

Normal condition – The springs keep the slips lightly retracted. The clamp applies a gentle, uniform grip.

If the pipe starts to fall – Downward pipe movement forces the tapered slips to wedge tighter against the pipe. The more the pipe tries to fall, the harder the slips grip – creating a selfenergizing locking action.

Key Advantages:

Uniform grip – Multiple hinged links distribute force evenly around the pipe, minimizing point loading and reducing pipe damage.

Adjustable diameter – Adding or removing links changes the effective working range. One clamp can cover a wide range of pipe sizes.

Durable construction – All parts are made of heattreated alloy steel for high strength and long service life.

Operation Cautions – Important Safety Rules

To ensure safe and reliable use, follow these guidelines:

#

Caution

a

Select the correct slip size for your drill tool OD.

b

Before each use, check slip teeth for sharpness and secure mounting. Teeth must not be loose, installed backwards, or dirty. Ensure all screws and cotter pins are complete and tight.

c

For wells deeper than 1,000 m – Lifting operations require two elevators. Do not rely on single slips and a single elevator.

d

When lifting drill collars, use slips together with the safety clamp. Position the slips about 50 cm from the female buckle end face, and the safety clamp about 5 cm above the slips.

e

All personnel must stand clear of the slips during rotation to avoid leg or foot injuries.

f

Replace slip teeth when worn down to 75% of original height (i.e., 1/4 wear).

g

If newly installed teeth are still unstable, replace the entire slip body.

h

Keep each hinge part flexible and complete. Replace worn or damaged hinge components promptly.

i

When fully opened, the clamp opening must be at least as large as the nominal drill tool size.

j

After installing a new tooth plate, at least 80% of the teeth must make contact with the drill tool.
