Drill Pipe – Complete Guide & Why Choose Sunrise

What Is Drill Pipe?

In simple terms, a drill pipe is the steel tube that connects the surface drilling rig to the drill bit at the bottom of the well. Think of it as the backbone and the bloodstream of the drilling operation. It does two critical jobs:

Transmits mechanical power – The drill pipe rotates the drill bit (or transfers rotation from a top drive or rotary table) to crush rock and dig deeper into the earth.

Transports drilling mud – High-pressure drilling fluid (mud) is pumped down the inside of the drill pipe, out through jets in the drill bit, and then back up the outside (annulus) to carry rock cuttings to the surface.

Without drill pipe, you cannot drill a well. And because a typical well can be thousands of meters deep, the drill pipe is actually a long string of individual pipe joints screwed together. Each joint must be strong enough to withstand enormous forces and harsh downhole conditions.

Drill pipe is not a one-time product. If properly handled and inspected, a single drill pipe can be used many times over the life of multiple wells. That is why quality and durability matter.

What Forces Does Drill Pipe Face?

Downhole conditions are extremely punishing. A good drill pipe must resist:

Great internal pressure – Drilling mud can be pumped at over 5,000 psi (pounds per square inch).

Great external pressure – Deep wells have high formation pressure and hydrostatic pressure from the mud column.

Tension (stretching) – The weight of the drill string itself (hundreds of tons) hangs from the top.

Compression (buckling) – When drilling, part of the string is pushed downward.

Torsion (twisting) – The pipe transmits rotational torque from the surface to the bit.

Bending and vibration – Wells are not perfectly straight. The pipe bends around curves and vibrates constantly.

Our drill pipe is designed and tested to handle all of these stresses – safely and repeatedly.

Key Features of Sunrise Drill Pipe

1. Manufactured to API SPEC 5D Standard

API SPEC 5D is the international standard for drill pipe specifications. It covers dimensions, steel grades, testing methods, and inspection requirements. All our drill pipe strictly complies with API SPEC 5D, meaning you get a product that is accepted by oil companies worldwide.

2. Wide Range of Sizes – 2-3/8” to 6-5/8”

Drilling needs vary from shallow water wells to deep oil and gas wells. Our drill pipe is available in nominal outside diameters ranging from 2-3/8 inches (for slim-hole or coiled tubing drilling) up to 6-5/8 inches (for large-diameter deep wells). This size range covers the vast majority of onshore and offshore drilling projects.

3. Multiple Steel Grades for Different Depths & Conditions

Drill pipe is graded by its minimum yield strength – how much pulling force it can take before permanently stretching. We offer four common API grades:

Grade

Minimum Yield Strength (PSI)

Best Use

E-75

75,000

Shallow to medium depth, vertical wells, lowcost operations.

X-95

95,000

Medium to deep wells, moderate deviated wells.

G-105

105,000

Deep wells, high-pressure zones, extended-reach drilling.

S-135

135,000

Ultra-deep, high-torque, and aggressive directional or horizontal drilling.

Higher grade pipe costs more but allows you to drill deeper with fewer string failures. Our engineers can recommend the right grade for your specific well plan.

4. Flexible Thread Connections – IF, FH, REG, NC

The threaded connections (also called tool joints) are the weakest point of any drill string – if they fail, the entire string can drop into the hole. We offer the most widely accepted connection types:

IF (Internal Flush) – Smooth bore, good for minimizing pressure loss.

FH (Full Hole) – Large internal diameter, excellent for high flow rates.

REG (Regular) – Traditional, rugged, and very common.

NC (National Coarse)– Modern, high-strength, interchangeable with many international standards.

Each connection type is precision machined and inspected to ensure a perfect fit and leak-free seal under extreme pressure.

5. Designed for Repeated Use

Drill pipe is not disposable. After a well is completed, the drill string is pulled out, inspected, and stored for the next job. Our drill pipe features:

Wear-resistant hardbanding (optional) – protects against casing wear.

Corrosion-resistant internal coating (optional) – extends life in sour gas or CO₂ environments.

Standard Sour Service (SS) grade available – for H₂S-prone fields.

Properly maintained, Sunrise’s drill pipe can be used for many wells – lowering your cost per foot drilled.

Technical Parameters (Drill Pipe Specification)

Below are the typical technical specifications for our drill pipe. Exact values depend on size, grade, and connection.

All drill pipe is supplied with mill test certificates (MTC) and can be third-party inspected by DNV, BV, SGS, or as you require.

Why Buy Drill Pipe from Sunrise?

You may wonder: “There are many drill pipe suppliers. Why Sunrise?” Here are five strong reasons.

1. API SPEC 5D Certified – No Compliance Risk

Every joint of drill pipe we deliver meets API SPEC 5D. We work only with licensed API-monogram manufacturers in China. You receive full traceability and documentation. No more worrying about non-compliant pipe being rejected at your wellsite or by your customer.

2. Wide Selection – One Stop for Your Entire Drill String

Need different sizes, grades, or connections for the same project? We can supply a complete drill string package: drill pipe, heavy weight drill pipe (HWDP), drill collars, and subs – all with matching connections. This avoids compatibility issues and reduces your purchasing workload.

3. Engineering Support – We Help You Choose

Not sure whether you need G-105 or S-135? NC38 or NC46? Our in-house engineering team reviews your well depth, planned trajectory, mud weight, and expected loads. We then recommend the most cost-effective combination. This service is free before you order.

4. Quality Control Throughout the Supply Chain

Because we are a trading company that partners with top Chinese manufacturers, we do not simply forward factory quotes. Our own quality inspectors:

Audit the factory before production.

Witness hydraulic press tests and non-destructive testing (NDT).

Check thread gauging and pipe straightness.

Review all documentation before shipping.

You get an independent layer of quality assurance – without having to travel to China yourself.

5. Global Logistics + After-Sales Support

We have exported drill pipe to more than 15 countries across five continents. Our logistics team handles:

Ocean freight booking

Export crating (to prevent rust and damage)

Customs clearance documentation

Inland delivery to your warehouse or wellsite

If a tool joint is damaged during handling, we can advise on local repair or ship you a replacement joint quickly. We treat each customer as a long-term partner, not a one-time buyer.

Common Applications of Our Drill Pipe

Onshore oil & gas drilling (vertical, directional, horizontal, and multilateral wells)

Offshore platform and jack-up rigs

Geothermal well drilling

Water well drilling (larger diameters)

Mining exploration drilling
