Product Description
Christmas Tree (Wellhead Equipment) – Complete Guide
What Is a Christmas Tree (Wellhead Equipment)?
In oil and gas production, a Christmas tree (often called an “Xmas tree”) is the assembly of valves, spools, and fittings installed at the top of a well. It looks a bit like a decorated tree – hence the name. But its job is serious: it controls the flow of oil or gas from the well, monitors pressure, and provides access for various operations.
A complete wellhead system consists of three main parts:
Casing head – connects to the outermost casing string and seals the annular space between casing strings.
Tubing head – connects to the production tubing (the pipe through which oil/gas flows up) and seals the space between tubing and casing.
Christmas tree – sits on top, with valves and chokes to control the flow, allow shutoff, and attach equipment for acidizing, fracturing, water injection, testing, and other special operations.
Think of the Christmas tree as the “master faucet” for the well. When you want to produce oil, you open the valves. If pressure gets too high, you close them. Need to run a wireline tool or pump chemicals downhole? The tree has side ports for that. It is the last barrier before hydrocarbons enter the pipeline – so reliability is absolutely critical.
At Sunrise, we supply Christmas trees that are especially suited for ESP (Electric Submersible Pump) applications, with builtin penetrator or cable passages. Our trees are built to API 6A standards, ensuring global acceptance and long service life.
Key Features of Our Christmas Tree
1. Designed for ESP Applications – Penetrator & Cable Options
Electric submersible pumps (ESPs) require a power cable that runs from the surface down to the pump. This cable must pass through the wellhead without leaking pressure. Our Christmas trees come with standardized penetrator options – specially sealed electrical connectors that allow the cable to pass safely through the tubing hanger and adapter flange. We offer two types:
Penetrator type – uses factorysealed, plugin connectors for quick installation and removal.
Cable penetration type – for traditional cablethroughhanger designs, with custom sealing elements.
If your project requires nonstandard cable sizes or hole configurations, we can make builttosuit penetration holes exactly as you specify.
2. General or Integral Structure
We design Christmas trees in either general (conventional, with separate flange connections) or integral (monoblock) structure. Integral trees have fewer seals and a smaller footprint – ideal for offshore platforms or spacelimited well pads.
3. SingleWing or DualWing Configuration
A “wing” is the side outlet from the main vertical bore. We offer:
Singlewing – one flow path, suitable for lowrate wells or injection wells.
Dualwing – two independent flow paths (often one for production, one for annulus or backup). Dualwing gives you more control and flexibility.
4. Pneumatic / Hydraulic Safety Valves
Optionally, we can equip your Christmas tree with pneumatic or hydraulic surface safety valves (SSVs). These automatically close if pressure exceeds set limits, fire is detected, or a remote emergency signal is sent. They are required by regulatory bodies in many regions and drastically reduce the risk of blowouts.
5. Choke Options – Positive or Adjustable
The choke (or “bean”) regulates the flow rate from the well. We supply:
Positive choke – a fixedorifice insert that gives a precise, repeatable flow restriction. Best for wells that do not need frequent adjustment.
Adjustable choke – a needleandseat design that lets you vary the flow rate manually or via actuator. Great for wells with changing pressures.
You choose what fits your reservoir behavior.
6. Easy Installation & Removal, Reliable Sealing, Long Life
Our Christmas trees use API 6A standard flange connections – which are robust, proven, and compatible with any other API 6A equipment. Installation requires no special tools, and the flange design makes it easy to replace components (valves, spools, chokes) without cutting or welding. The sealing system uses metaltometal or premium elastomers, tested to hold full well pressure for decades.
7. API 6A Standard Flange Connection
All our pressurecontaining components are designed, manufactured, and tested according to API Spec 6A (the international standard for wellhead and Christmas tree equipment). Flanges are dimensionally interchangeable with any API 6A component from other reputable manufacturers. This means you are never locked into proprietary parts.
Technical Parameters (Typical Values)
Below are the standard specifications for our Christmas tree series. Exact values depend on well pressure, temperature, and bore size.

*Example: For a typical onshore oil well with 5,000 psi working pressure, we would supply a 41/16” bore, dualwing Christmas tree with manual gate valves, adjustable choke, and ESP penetrator for a 3conductor flat cable.*
Why Buy a Christmas Tree from Sunrise?
You might be considering other suppliers. Here is why oil and gas operators choose us.
1. ESP Ready Design Saves You Time & Money
If your well uses an Electric Submersible Pump, you need a Christmas tree that can safely pass the power cable through the hanger and flange. Our standard penetrator options and custom hole drilling mean you do not have to modify a generic tree in the field – which is expensive and can compromise seals. We deliver a tree pre-configured for your exact cable type.
2. API 6A Complete Compliance – Full Traceability
Our Christmas trees are built by API licensed manufacturers and verified by our own quality inspectors. You receive:
Mill test certificates for all forgings.
Hydrostatic test reports.
Material and hardness verification.
Third party inspection (if requested – BV, DNV, SGS, etc.).
No hidden shortcuts. No “almost” compliance.
3. Long Service Life & High Reliability
We use only high grade alloy steel (such as 4130 or stainless steel for sour service) with corrosion-resistant trim (Inconel, Monel, or 316 SS). The sealing stacks are tested to millions of cycles. Our trees have a proven reputation among CNPC, SINOPEC, and international clients for operating trouble-free for 15+ years.
4. Engineering Support – We Help You Specify
The number of options (pressure rating, material class, bore size, penetrator holes, choke type, safety valve) can be overwhelming. Our engineers will review your well data – expected pressure, temperature, H₂S/CO₂ content, ESP cable type – and produce a complete specification list. We also provide installation drawings and torque procedures.
5. Global Logistics & Spare Parts
We have exported wellhead equipment to more than 15 countries across five continents. Our team handles export crating (to protect valves and seals), customs documentation, and delivery to your wellsite. We also stock common spare parts (valve stems, seals, choke beans, penetrator kits) in our Beijing warehouse for rapid shipment.
